Pharmacogenomics Delivery Plan
Development of a Pharmacogenomics Delivery Plan
In response to one of the key aims of the Genomic Delivery Plan for Wales, the National Pharmacogenomics Group for Wales (NPGG) are developing a pharmacogenomics delivery plan.
Pharmacogenomics, the study of how genetic variations influence drug response, is poised to significantly transform the future of healthcare delivery helping us to tailor drug therapies to ensure individuals receive the most effective treatment, while minimising the risk of adverse drug reactions.
A key driver for the development of the plan is to ensure we are able to respond to the requirements set out within the national (UK) and Wales delivery programmes, which includes a commitment to develop an NHS pharmacogenomics service for Wales.
About the plan
With the expansion of pharmacogenomics, the aim of this plan is to:
- Develop clear actions for adoption of pharmacogenomics within routine clinical practice
- Establish networks and governance structures
- Provide a roadmap to build infrastructure, including:
- Digital technology
- Research and innovation
- Workforce development
- Clinical pathways
The 3-year delivery plan will address the development of pharmacogenomic services across community, primary, secondary and community care.
A vision statement for the Pharmacogenomics Delivery Plan is now available. The development of this plan aims to outline a series of actions that we will implement in partnership over the next three years.
How can you get involved?
We are currently consulting on the proposed key actions which will form the foundations of the Pharmacogenomics Delivery Plan and would value your input.
Over the last few months, we have undertaken significant engagement with stakeholders from across Wales, the UK, and patient and public representatives. We have carried out extensive research and have reviewed available intelligence. All of this activity has informed and shaped the proposed actions and provided a clear view on the priorities that we need to address over the next three years.
We want to now formally ‘test’ the draft actions with stakeholders to ensure that we have identified solutions that will have the greatest impact.
Details of proposed actions can be found here
The consultation is running throughout July. You can provide feedback on the actions by completing a short questionnaire or emailing comments to npgg@wales.nhs.uk
