Now that all colleagues have relocated to the Canolfan Iechyd Genomig Cymru in Coryton, we thought this would be a great opportunity to chat with Sharon, Facilities Lead for the site. Sharon oversees the running of the site, making sure it’s safe, functional and efficient for all staff who are based there. We heard from Sharon on the variety within her role and how collaboration is a fundamental factor in achieving success.
How long have you worked in the role for?
I have been in this role for 6 months in its official capacity; however, prior to this, I had been supporting the Directorate manager in health and safety and estates related actions for 6 months.
What attracted you to the role initially?
I was drawn to this role because of the opportunity to make a tangible difference in creating safe, efficient, and sustainable facilities. The chance to work closely with diverse teams and lead initiatives that directly impact the functionality and independence of the site was particularly appealing. I enjoy interacting with various departments/organisations both within Cardiff and Vale, and with contractors, stakeholders and site organisations.
What did your career/education look like up until this point?
My career has been a journey of continuous learning and growth. Before stepping into this role, I gained extensive experience in the clinical service in an operational role as a Secretary, before moving into the Business Team then seconded into Assistant Service Manager, both at AWMGS and then Haematology. My departmental background in AWMGS and the relationships forged, laid a strong foundation for the strategic and operational responsibilities I now manage.
What’s your favourite thing about your job?
My favourite part of the job is the variety it brings. Whether it’s collaborating with Estates teams, contractors, and health and safety professionals, or developing processes that promote collaboration and independence, every day offers a new challenge and the chance to make a positive impact.
Is there anything specific that you’re hoping to achieve while you’re in this role?
A key goal for me is to develop and implement processes that lead the site toward greater independence. I’m also passionate about fostering a culture of safety and sustainability, ensuring that the site operates as effectively and responsibly as possible. Working towards a NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) qualification alongside the on-the-job learning will enable the site to become a flagship example of how we can work together to ensure the people in Wales and the staff supporting them, have a positive experience of the facility daily.
Is there a piece of advice you’d give to someone looking to pursue a similar career?
Stay adaptable and open to learning. Facilities management requires balancing strategic thinking with practical problem-solving, so gaining experience in both operational and leadership roles can be invaluable. Always prioritise collaboration—it’s essential for success in this field.
What are your favourite things to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family, traveling, coastal walks, and when time allows, a good gym session! These activities help me recharge and bring fresh perspectives to my role.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I’m proud to be part of a team that values innovation, safety, and sustainability. Together, we’re working to create a space that not only meets current needs but also sets the standard for future growth and independence.
